Cybersecurity Is Becoming Public Policy

Join New Mexico Legislators and Business Leaders Online for the Legislative Forum on Cybersecurity and Business

New Mexico’s business environment is increasingly shaped by cybersecurity decisions made far beyond the IT department. Those decisions now influence economic development, consumer confidence, workforce readiness, and public policy.

On July 24, SecureNM™ will bring state legislators together with business, nonprofit, and professional leaders to discuss how cybersecurity is affecting organizations across New Mexico. While all in-person seating has been reserved, organizations statewide can still participate through the live Zoom broadcast.

Representative Kathleen Cates is organizing a bipartisan panel that includes Senator Jay Block, Senator Heather Berghmans, Senator Angel Charley, Representative Michelle Pauline Abeyta, Representative Joshua Hernandez, and additional legislators as schedules permit. Together with business leaders and audience participants, they will examine issues extending well beyond technology, including economic competitiveness, consumer protection, operational resilience, commercial espionage, and legislation expected during the 2027 session.

The discussion reflects an important shift. Cybersecurity is no longer simply about protecting computer systems. It has become a leadership responsibility that influences business continuity, reputation, regulatory obligations, and the confidence customers place in every organization.

Participants will hear practical perspectives from both policymakers and organizational leaders, along with real examples of cybersecurity incidents that have affected New Mexico employers, nonprofits, and communities. The objective is not to debate technology, but to strengthen understanding between those developing public policy and those responsible for operating organizations every day.
